About & Methodology
How InflationCalculator.co.nz calculates purchasing power, where the data comes from, and how to interpret the results.
What InflationCalculator.co.nz does
InflationCalculator.co.nz is an independent New Zealand data website designed to make inflation and historical price information easier to understand. The main calculator compares the purchasing power of New Zealand dollars between different years.
Inflation calculator methodology
The calculator compares the Consumer Price Index in the selected starting year with the CPI in the selected target year. The calculation is:
For annual comparisons, this website uses calendar-year average CPI values. That means the quarterly CPI observations available for each year are averaged to create one annual figure.
Why the calculator starts from 1968
New Zealand changed from pounds, shillings and pence to decimal currency in 1967. The public calculator starts from 1968 so all displayed comparisons use New Zealand dollars throughout the full calendar year.
CPI data sources
The historical CPI series used on this website is based on New Zealand Consumer Price Index data. The long-run series is aligned to the New Zealand CPI reference convention used in the calculator dataset, and recent observations are updated using official New Zealand CPI releases.
You can inspect and download the exact annual series used by the site from the New Zealand Inflation Chart page.
Fuel price data
The historical petrol and diesel page uses nominal annual average New Zealand fuel price data published by the Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment (MBIE). Nominal prices show the actual dollar price motorists paid at the time and are not adjusted for inflation.
Visit the NZ Petrol & Diesel Price History page to explore the data.
Partial-year data
When the latest calendar year is not complete, the annual CPI figure is based only on the quarterly observations published so far. The calculator identifies the latest year as partial when fewer than four quarters are available.
Why results can differ from another inflation calculator
Inflation calculators can produce slightly different results depending on whether they use quarterly CPI, annual averages, a particular month or quarter, different historical series, or different rounding conventions. The methodology on this website is designed to be consistent across annual comparisons.
Important limitation
CPI is an average measure. It does not mean every product or household expense changed by exactly the same amount. Petrol, housing, groceries, electricity and other categories can move very differently from the overall CPI.
