Equivalent value = original amount × (target CPI ÷ starting CPI)

New Zealand inflation calculator

Inflation changes what a dollar can buy over time. This calculator uses New Zealand Consumer Price Index data to estimate how much money from one year would need to be worth in another year to have similar purchasing power.

How is inflation measured in New Zealand?

New Zealand inflation is commonly measured using the Consumer Price Index (CPI). CPI tracks changes in the prices of a representative basket of goods and services purchased by households. When the CPI rises, the same amount of money generally buys less than it did before.

What does an inflation comparison mean?

If the calculator says that $100 in an earlier year is equivalent to $250 in a later year, that does not mean every product became exactly 2.5 times more expensive. It means the overall CPI increased enough that $250 in the later year represents roughly the same general purchasing power as $100 in the earlier year.

Why can inflation calculators give slightly different results?

Different calculators may use quarterly figures, annual averages, different CPI reference periods, or different rounding methods. This website uses calendar-year average CPI values for its annual comparisons.

NZ inflation calculator FAQ

What does this New Zealand inflation calculator do?

It estimates the amount of money in one year that would have similar purchasing power in another year using historical New Zealand CPI data.

What year does the calculator start from?

The public calculator starts from 1968. New Zealand decimalised its currency in 1967, so starting from 1968 avoids mixing pre-decimal and decimal currency periods.

Does this calculator use New Zealand CPI data?

Yes. The calculations are based on historical New Zealand Consumer Price Index data. The annual comparison series is built from quarterly CPI observations and converted to calendar-year averages.

Is the latest year a full-year inflation figure?

Not always. If the current year is still in progress, only the quarters published so far are included. The calculator shows a note when the latest year is incomplete.

What is CPI?

The Consumer Price Index measures how the prices of a representative basket of household goods and services change over time.

Why is CPI different from the price of a specific product?

CPI measures the overall price level across many goods and services. Individual products such as petrol, bread, rent, or electricity can rise or fall much faster than the overall CPI.
